Jan Mulder’s commitment to convey emotional and existential experiences through memorized or invented landscapes, results in vivid abstract oil paintings. Mulder uses broad brush strokes, he pours and splashes paint over the canvas as abstract marks that accumulate in balanced compositions that reflect changes of light and space.

…’ This is the dream I see manifesting itself in Jan Mulder’s work, in greatly diverse ways – and it is not a video of whatever may be occurring inside the brain at a certain point in time. Instead, I see a series of stills, precise and recognizable depictions of abstract experience coupled with that indescribable sense of what we, for lack of any better word, may call ‘atmosphere’, or ‘mood’, or perhaps’sense of life’ or, very occasionally, the ‘essence of being’. Mulder’s steadily growing oeuvre should be seen in terms of an expanding whole, moving towards completeness as each successive work contributes to this rendering of an inner reality. The paintings represent, in line and color, the continually surprising, continually shifting milieu which dreams conjure up for us, and which continues to elude us. These canvases together form an attempt to stop and hold things, everything that presents itself to the retina in dreams – whatever gets stored in our heads, but never finds the igniting spark to visualize the particular memory’…

…’Deze droom zie ik in een grote verscheidenheid in het werk van Jan Mulder. Het is geen video van wat zich dan in onze hersenen afspeelt; het is een reeks van stills, nauwkeurige en herkenbare weergaven van onze abstracte ervaring, gepaard aan die onbeschrijfbare gewaarwording die we, bij gebrek aan beter, ‘sfeer’ of ‘stemming’ noemen, of ook wel ‘levensgevoel’, of een enkele keer de essentie van het zijn. Dit gestaag groeiend oeuvre zie ik als een zich uitbreidend geheel, de steeds verder de volledigheid naderende weergave van een innerlijke werkelijkheid. De lijnen en kleuren van het telkens weer verrassende, onophoudelijk wisselend milieu dat de droom ons voortovert en dat ons dan ook telkens weer ontsnapt. Dit werk is de arrestatie van dat alles, van datgene wat zich op ons netvlies heeft aangediend terwijl we droomden. Wat bewaard is in ons geheugen, maar wat daarna geen ontstekingsmechanisme heeft gevonden om deze herinnering zichtbaar te maken’…
